TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE
(Peter Sando)
I just canÕt wait for this
I just canÕt wait for that
I keep on checkinÕ that old clock on the wall
a watched pot never cooks
no time write my book
and in the end I ainÕt got nothinÕ at all

Time Waits For No One
a year goes by in the wink of an eye
Time Waits For No One
you know IÕm gonna love you
Ôtil the day I die

Life sweet as the day is long
I just canÕt wait Ôtil dawn
anticipating what the
fates will allow
weÕve been through this before
I never could find a cure
but that was then this is now

Time Waits For No One
a year goes by in the wink of an eye
Time Waits For No One
you know IÕm gonna love you
Ôtil the day I die

I want to capture the moment
IÔm going to live for today
tomorrowÕs never what we
thought it would be
donÕt want to waste my time
holdinÕ on to yesterday

Another New YearÕs Eve
my heart is on my sleeve
I just canÕt help the way IÕm feeling inside
you count the seconds down
youÕre listeninÕ for the sound
but the world keeps turning
and thereÕs no place to hide

Time Waits For No One
a year goes by in the wink of an eye
time waits for no one
you know IÕm gonna love you
Ôtil the day I die

AFRAID OF THE DARK
(Peter Sando)
Your eyes were wide open
as they struggled just to see
the stranger in the moonlight
and who he could not be
you took my hand
it was just a walk in the park
Ôtwas then I realized
you were Afraid Of The Dark

You worship the morning
bask in the sun
but thereÕs no need to gamble
when youÕve already won
youÕll never know
what itÕs like to cling to a spark
and itÕs hard to live alone
when youÕre Afraid Of The Dark

This world is insane a flickering flame
moving yet going nowhere
you look for a sound it turns you around
you reach but thereÕs nobody there

I stand alone in the twilight
I walk a fine line
all love is abandoned
IÕve turned my back on time
the eveningÕs refrain
puts a chill deep in my heart
I was blind to let you go
now IÕm Afraid Of The Dark
Afraid Of The Dark

SALLY HEMINGS
(Peter Sando)
Born as a slave Sally Hemings came of age
knowing only to obey
strange as it seems just a child of fifteen
trapped in a passion play
Old Master Tom he was wise to be gone
when the grapes grew on the vine
half sister of his wife
Sally served him through life
as a secret concubine

ThoÕ words that he wrote would endure
equality life and liberty
it goes against the grain
and the tick and the tock
of the two-faced clock
can drive a man insane

Time passes slow down on Mulberry Row
where sorrow never ends
off in the night to the north pass for white
never to be heard from again

ThoÕ words that he wrote would endure
humanity owned as property
it goes against the grain
and the tick and the tock
of the two-faced clock
can drive a man insane

Tom chose to die on the 4th of July
as they gathered round his bed
Sally lit the flame to protect his good name
and the letters never were read

ThoÕ words that she wrote would implore
they sold the slaves
now he turns in his grave
as the tourists stop and stare
while Sally rests in peace
Ôneath the Hampton Inn
and nobody knows that sheÕs there

BRIGHT HEADLIGHTS
(Peter Sando)
CruisinÕ down on Main Street
lookinÕ for a thrill
I was being followed by a
yellow Coupe De Ville
now she had a reputation
for driving pretty fast
it may not be the first time
but it might be the last

Then she gave me the Bright Headlights
she was blowinÕ her horn
she said move on over
but I just kept on goinÕ

Stopped at a stoplight
give a little gun
I rolled down my window she said
Òwe can have some funÓ
I thought about the last time
and the time before
My face turned red the light turned green
and I put it to the floor

Then she gave me the Bright Headlights
she was blowinÕ her horn
she said move on over
but I just kept on goinÕ

Soft shoulders dangerous curves
whispers in my ear three little words
but my momma once told me
when love ainÕt real
keep your eyes on the road
and your hands on the wheel

Oh I headed for the wilderness highway 46
fog as thick as pea soup
my eyes were playinÕ tricks
itÕs a reckless situation
to love her is to fear her
and all I could see was that solid white line
and that Cadillac in my mirror

Then she gave me the Bright Headlights
she was blowinÕ her horn
she said move on over
but I just kept on goinÕ

JADED LOVE
(Peter Sando)
How could we mistake this pain for pleasure
and thoÕ it seems a little crude
you say Òone manÕs junk is anotherÕs treasure
so enjoy your solitudeÓ

I looked into your eyes I thought I saw the future
now I know it was just the past
I saw myself reduced to some lowly creature
crawling crying slowly sinking fast

Is it the moon not quite full
ah, but that was always close enough
is it just a stage that weÕre going through
is it me or is it you or is it only Jaded Love
Jaded Love Jaded Love

Was I betrayed by all my blindness
and the music in my reverie
Is this the price I pay for so much kindness
or a scene from some dark comedy

Is it the moon not quite full
ah, but that was always close enough
is it just a stage that weÕre going through
is it me or is it you or is it only Jaded Love
Jaded Love Jaded Love

THE CROWD GOES WILD
(Peter Sando)
A loud guitar the superstar
gets caught up in his own disguise
flying fingers and a monkey on his back
right before your eyes
praise from the critics hype in the press
his image is perfect but his life is a mess
and The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild again

Trumpets roar the matador
sparkles in grand parade
up to the moment of final truth
when the kill is finally made
an ear for the lady the cape for the king
as kerchiefs and roses pour into the ring
and The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild again

Spotlights fade the naked young lady
has tranquilized her pride
now sheÕs a feast for hungry eyes
thereÕs no place left to hide
sheÕd be up on the ladder
if she ever had a chance
but she forces a smile
and gets lost in the dance
and The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild again

Jump! Jump! they scream to the man
on the roof from the street below
he knows itÕs time to bring the curtain down
thereÕll be no second show
call for the clergy call for the net
but for once in his life his mind is set
and The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild
The Crowd Goes Wild again

LET ME BE THE ONE
(Peter Sando)
Let me be the one to put
sunshine in your days
jewels in your box
flowers in your vase
Let me be the one to put
the peaches in your pie
sugar in your tea
the twinkle in your eye

Let me be the one who comes
home to you each night
sit there by the fire
make you feel alright
Let nothing come between us
through the years of toil and strife
I will always be your friend
would you be my wife

I know my love is gonna stay
until my dying day
if you say youÕll Let Me Be The One

Let me be your driving wheel
when the road gets rough
holding down my job
we will always have enough
Let me be the father of
the children that you bear
give them all my love
I always will be there

I know my love is gonna stay
until my dying day
if you say youÕll Let Me Be The One

NO EARTH CAN BE WON
(Peter Sando)
ThereÕs a toy in the field
It turns to rust
thereÕs a boy at the wheel
dust to dust

well it wonÕt be a war
that makes us free
you wonÕt need no lock on your door
when understanding is the key
No Earth Can Be Won

If you just take what you need
and give when you can
youÕll be planting the seed
of love of land
No Earth Can Be Won
Now your nation may rise
but the night will fall
thereÕs a full moon in the sky
and you can see it all
the wind and the rain
the land and the sea
the pleasure and pain
you and me
No Earth Can Be Won

LETÕS GET SERIOUS
(Peter Sando)
It all started as a childish game
practical jokes and ÒDo I know your name?Ó
we fooled around and in a day or two
my heart was set on you

LetÕs Get Serious letÕs talk it over
weÕre such good friends but baby
we could be lovers
youÕve been playing on my mind
and I do believe itÕs time we got serious

ItÕs funny honey
when youÕre laughinÕ with me
weÕve so much in common
it was meant to be
and they say that two can live
as cheap as one
well the fun has just begun

LetÕs Get Serious letÕs talk it over
weÕre such good friends but baby
we could be lovers
youÕve been playing on my mind
and I do believe itÕs time we got serious

Talk to me straight for just a little while
tell me you love me and I wonÕt crack a smile
I canÕt believe somebody could look so fine
and baby thatÕs no line

LetÕs Get Serious
letÕs live together
weÕre such good friends and baby
will be forever
youÕve been playing on my mind
and I do believe itÕs time we got serious

HOUSE FOR SALE
(Peter Sando)
Down at the end of Sycamore Lane
thereÕs a three bedroom ranch
that looks over the plain
now I donÕt mean to gossip
but youÕll find out anyway
the previous owners
have gone separate ways
House For Sale divorce situation
a love liquidation of a husband and wife
House For Sale the bedroom is spacious
the owners are anxious to start a new life

HeÕd stop on the way home
from work every day
at the local saloon
to drink half of his pay
when he came home at 10
she would walk out the door
to a part time position
at a convenience store

House For Sale divorce situation
a love liquidation of a husband and wife
House For Sale the bedroom is spacious
the owners are anxious to start a new life

Well youÕd better act fast this one wonÕt last
theyÕre at the end of the line
and thereÕs nothing else out there at $129

In need of some paint
the lawnÕs overgrown
thereÕs a hole in the kitchen
where something was thrown
but other than that
well itÕs really quite new
a handyman special
just waiting for you

House For Sale the bedroom is spacious
the owners are anxious to start a new life

THE VISIT
(Peter Sando, Jack McMahon)
Through the lamplight windowpane
colors dancing in the rain
I felt a presence I had known
all at once I was not alone

I could almost touch her face
another time another space
tomorrows I had left behind
yesterdays IÕve yet to find

Close my eyes the meaning of my dreams
is it much more than it seems
I canÕt even tell you
when I wake I feel my life has changed
time rearranged and I hear
words she never spoke
on days that never broke

Vapors floating through the air
in the garden standing there
softly I could hear her song
through the silence of the dawn

Close my eyes the meaning of my dreams
is it much more than it seems
I canÕt even tell you
when I wake I feel my life has changed
time rearranged and I hear
words she never spoke
on days that never broke
the love she never gave
the love we never made

THE GHOST OF ROBERT ERSKINE
(Peter Sando)
Grinding sounds from the Drink Brook Bridge
gravestones shaking in the dark
the bright blue glow of his lamp on the ridge
a spirit slowly moving through the park

Cats all scatter as he comes down the lane
stray dogs howling at the moon
a cold damp chill from a broken windowpane
then you feel his presence in the room

ThereÕs a creak on the stair
and a must in the air
hear the leaves aÕrustling on the ground
on a cold October night
when the stars are shining bright
The Ghost Of Robert Erskine comes around

Haunting the hills and the trails and the trees
that he knew when he was still alive
lo the marine chevaux de frise
waiting for the enemy to arrive
He wonders what became
of his mine and his forge
as he walks right through he parlor door
hide and seek with his old friend George
dying just to know who won the war

ThereÕs a creak on the stair
and a must in the air
hear the leaves aÕrustling on the ground
oh the children will cry
and the eagleÕs gonna fly when
The Ghost Of Robert Erskine comes around

Postscript

After I wrote my historical ballad, JOHN BROWN, Wenke suggested a song about SALLY HEMINGS, Thomas JeffersonÕs slave mistress.
Upon visiting Monticello, I was intrigued by JeffersonÕs invention, the two-faced clock, ingeniously geared to operate on back to back faces simultaneously. With Jefferson having been both a slaveholder and at the same time a prominent proponent of freedom, it seemed that the muse was at work and the song was writing itself. I also overheard Hemings deniers mumbling in disgust about Òthat woman,Ó but DNA evidence has proven that Sally did indeed bear T.J.Õs children, who were granted freedom while the more than 200 remaining slaves were sold at auction upon his death.

THE GHOST OF ROBERT ERSKINE is based on a local legend in my hometown. Erskine was brought in from Scotland in 1771 to manage the iron mines in the Ramapough Mountains and found himself in the midst of a revolution. He sided with the Americans and actually became Surveyor General for George Washington. He devised the Chevaux De Frise, a series of large spikes constructed to pierce the hulls of the British ships as they navigated the Hudson River. Witnesses claim that they have seen him emerge from his grave on Halloween Eve, but he has never harmed anyone as far as I know.
